The Day I Realized My Life Was Different
I remember her coming to the door. The caseworker. Everyone was so sad, as if they were saying goodbye to someone. I didn’t know that someone was in fact, me.
As she grabbed my hand, and my little brown suitcase, I remember my mother crying, asking if she could “come with”. The answer was simple. “No.”
I remember walking, looking back at the house, with my family in the doorway crying. Did I do something wrong? I thought. Did I make a mess and they are now mad at me? I knew I was always getting into things, or breaking things. But did they hate me so much they wanted to send me away? Really?
As I climbed into the back seat of the car, tears were streaming down my face, panic had hit. I felt like my heart was going to explode. Maybe she is taking me to my grandma’s house. She only lived a block down, maybe she was taking me to visit grandma!
But as the block ended, and the car turned, I knew I was not going to my grandma’s house.
My heart began to race. Where was this woman taking me? I began to panic, cry, and beg her to take me home but she didn’t even look at me. She didn’t even hear me.
She didn’t even care. As we turned several corners, we arrived at a large white apartment building. I had never seen this building before.
The woman opened my door, unhooked my seatbelt, and grabbed me up. I began kicking and screaming, I wanted to go home. I wanted my mommy. I wanted my sisters and my brothers; I wanted my grandma. “I’m sorry” I screamed, “whatever I did, I won’t do it again.”
She just carried me to the threshold and opened the door. It was a large glass door that squealed as she opened it. My heart felt as though it was going to explode.
As we walked up the three flights of stairs, I felt like I was going to faint. I was so scared. I had no idea what was waiting for me at the top of this staircase. All I knew was everyone I loved, was gone.
